History & Significance of Estanque Grande del Retiro

The Estanque Grande del Retiro was erected between 1634 and 1635 by the master builder Cristóbal de Aguilera, commissioned by the Count-Duke of Olivares for King Philip IV. It is one of the few surviving vestiges of the immensely important royal estate of the Buen Retiro, established from 1632 onward as a palatial recreational complex. Navigable since its origins, it originally featured a beautiful, wooded oval island at its centre, where courtiers and ladies disembarked for nautical promenades and open-air theatrical performances.

The Estanque Grande is a large rectangular basin of approximately 250 metres in length by 125 metres in width. All four sides are enclosed by iron railings set upon stone pedestals, except on the eastern front where the Monument to Alfonso XII stands. The north-eastern corner houses the boat stores and the present-day landing stage.

Historical Reforms: From the Oval Island to the Monument

After the damage inflicted upon the gardens during the Peninsular War, Ferdinand VII commissioned his architect Isidro González Velázquez in 1819 to design several improvements: the Egyptian Fountain flanked by two water-wheel pavilions, the eastern landing stage, and unexecuted projects such as a colossal central column topped by a statue of Hercules. In 1867 the pond was leased and opened to public navigation, with adjacent catering services drawing a steady public. Finally, a new northern jetty was built in 1917; the old eastern landing stage was demolished and replaced on its site by the Monument to Alfonso XII, inaugurated in 1922 as the most decisive intervention in the history of the pond.

Hydraulic System & Singular Fountains

Beyond the main sheet of water, the complex includes the Egyptian Fountain (Fuente Egipcia) placed at the southern extremity, designed by Isidro González Velázquez as part of Ferdinand VII's reform programme. Historically the pond was served by six water wheels — one on each shorter side and two on each longer side — joined by masonry enclosures, plus the navigable Canal del Mallo, which ran south to a further polylobed pond and island near the former hermitage of San Antonio de los Portugueses. In 2003 a comprehensive rehabilitation, cleaning and refurbishment of the Estanque del Retiro was carried out by the City Council.
